Girls basketball: Mt. Hebron beats Glenelg, 39-33, in overtime upset

Mt. Hebron had not forgotten. Its players still remembered the third game of the season when they were humbled in a 39-point loss to Glenelg.

Friday night the Vikings dished out a satisfying payback, handing Glenelg its first loss of the season, 39-33, in overtime.

"It was just beautiful," said Mt. Hebron coach Tony Bell. "My team is back. My girls believe in themselves, even though our record isn't that good."

The Vikings are now 7-6 in county play; Glenelg is 12-1.

Each team had an opportunity to win the game in the last fleeting seconds of regulation. With less than 3 seconds on the clock, Glenelg's Sam Heisig hit the front end of a one-and-one to tie the game, but she missed her second shot. Mt. Hebron's Micky Bowen rebounded the ball and was fouled with 1.4 on the clock.

She missed her free throw and the game went into overtime with the scored tied, 33-33.

Freshman Megan Doherty (nine points) hit a three from the corner and senior Kelly Jones (14) hit another three, her third of the game, to account for Mt. Hebron's overtime scoring.

"Once we were in overtime, it was fierce," Bell said.

Tianna Wallpher hurt her knee and Megan Konig subbed in and pulled down some big rebounds.

Mt. Hebron was able to get Glenelg's Emily Russo in foul trouble; Wallpher took two charges from her. Russo fouled out with about two minutes to go in the overtime.

The Gladiators loss opens up the county race. They had had a two-game lead over Oakland Mills and River Hill, which each won Friday night. Glenelg plays at Oakland Mills next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Bell couldn't say enough about his team's performance. "As long as we play together, anything is possible. They played so well tonight. I haven't seen this in a long time. It was a total team effort."
