Girls basketball: Free throws lift Long Reach past Marriotts Ridge, 42-41, in OT

Long Reach trailed much of the game but managed to pull off the victory after Katelyn Peterson tied the game, hitting a one-and-one, to send it into overtime.

"Katelyn put is in position to get to overtime and then they showed up," Long Reach coach Kelli Cofield said of her team's 42-41 overtime win over Marriotts Ridge.

"We were down by eight points with 1:30 to play," Cofield said.

Long Reach outscored Marriotts Ridge, 17-7, in the fourth quarter and free throws helped the Lightning chip into the lead. The team shot 32.

"In overtime we played good man-to-man defense," Cofield said. "I don't think we had a basket; everything came from the line."

For Long Reach, Olivia Callan had 14 points; 11 were from free throws. Imani Sanders added 14 points and pulled in seven rebounds. Alexis Briscoe didn't have her best offensive game, but gathered five timely rebounds.

Marriotts Ridge's Brooke Sharbaugh was injured in the third quarter and taken off by ambulance.

"I think she'll be OK," said Mustang coach Kristen Reier.

It was an intense game and both teams were in foul trouble, she added.

"I'm really proud of the way we played. It was a loss, but I don't feel like it was a loss," Reier said.

Long Reach won the first meeting between the teams by two points.

Zelor Massaquoi (18) and Megan Fowler (10) led Reservoir.

"It was turnovers down the stretch," Massaquoi said. "We're down by one, turn it over, stop them, and turn it over again. … When we lose games, nobody beats us, we beat ourselves. That's what happens. Our coach always says it not what happens in the game, it's what happens the next day in practice."
