Girls basketball: Free throws help River Hill beat Oakland Mills, 56-50, in overtime

After making the River Hill basketball team as a freshman, Katie Arensmeier didn't play last year.

"Making the team as a freshman was overwhelming to me," she said. "Last year, I felt like I needed a break. This year, I feel like I have a whole lot of making up to do."

Friday night, the junior showed she's progressing nicely, scoring 11 points and making all four of her free throw attempts in overtime as River Hill defeated Oakland Mills, 56-50.

Alauna Jackson, who played for Howard last year, paced River Hill's scoring with 23 points. Two of them were overtime free throws.

River Hill jumped out to an early lead in the game and then saw Oakland Mills chip away at the score until the Scorpions twice tied the game in the fourth quarter and then went ahead, 50-48, with 1:15 left. But the Scorpions never scored again.

Jackson's soft jumper with 3 seconds left sent the game into overtime, which the Hawks controlled.

"It was a great shot, I have to say that," said Oakland Mills' Kara Hight. "We just couldn't get there in time" to defend against it.

"That shot from Alauna was a key play," said River Hill's Jenna Collins.

Collins was assigned to faceguard Jasmine Hill, Oakland Mills' top player. The two battled the entire game, and while Hill finished with 23 points, none of them came easily.

"We know they were a good team … and their second half is usually better than their first half. They have quality players and good athletes," said River Hill coach Teresa Waters.

"We just couldn't finish at the end," said Oakland Mills' Nicole Twardowicz. "We missed easy shots and foul shots. Honestly, that's what hurt us."

The two teams were statistically close to each other in every category except free throw shooting. River Hill hit 74 percent (20-27) of its free throws while Oakland Mills hit 54 percent (14-26).

The only points scored in overtime were free throws - all by River Hill.

"In overtime, we fell apart," Hight said "We had played so hard all game. A lot of us were in foul trouble and we were trying to avoid fouls, but we weren't together. We weren't one in overtime."

Glenelg (11-0) is a beneficiary of River Hill's victory. Oakland Mills had been one game behind Glenelg in the county standings. Now Oakland Mills and River Hill are tied for second. Each team has two county losses.
