Centennial stunned Howard, beating the top-seeded Lions, 3-2, in double overtime, Friday in a Class 3A East quarterfinal. The Eagles (7-7 entering the game) had the eighth seed in the tournament. Howard's record was 9-3. Both teams had first-round byes.
Jen Swiger scored the game-winner. The pass came from Anna Kelly.
"It was a perfect pass and Jen one-timed it from the top of the circle," said Centennial coach Tara Fadrowski. Swiger is a defender for Centennial but plays forward on her indoor field hockey team.
Centennial, which lost to Howard, 4-1, in the regular season, had to come-from-behind in this game.
Howard's Emily Penn scored the only goal of the first half.
"We don't usually win when we don't score first," Fadrowski said.
The two teams traded goals in the second half. With Jackie Fasulo tying the score for Centennial. Then Howard's Courtney Barnwell, assisted by Casey White, gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage.
Centennial's Erica Heaphy scored in the last 4 minutes of regulation to force overtime.
Centennial's 11 seniors chose the team's seven overtime players and they designated Swiger to be a substitute. Her role turned out to be invaluable.
Also crucial in the outcome was goalie Amanda Hendrix. "She was amazing in the overtime," said Fadrowski. "She made a save, laid-out fully-extended."
Five of the 14 saves Hendrix made in the game, came in overtime.
Overtime in field hockey is sudden victory.
