College lacrosse: Markwordt sets career goal record at Ohio State

Alayna Markwordt is racking up the women's lacrosse records at Ohio State. The senior attack from Woodbine broke the school record for career goals during a weekend trip to California.

She tied the Ohio State record (143 goals, which was held by Megan Mirick and Kelly Haggerty) in a game Feb. 10 against San Diego State. Then she broke the record with a single tally against Stanford Feb. 12.

Next up for the Glenelg graduate is the career points record. She is nine away from breaking the current top mark (243), which was set by Haggerty.

In addition to breaking the program record, the senior captain's goal against Stanford extended her goal-scoring streak to 24 games and her point-scoring streak to 50 games.

Markwordt has started all 53 career games to date and has 144 goals, 91 assists and 235 points. She was a 2011 IWLCA second team All-American and at two-time All-ALC player.

She has been named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Watch List. The list includes the top players across all three divisions of college lacrosse. In late April, the list will be narrowed to 25, who will be named Tewaaraton nominees. In mid-May, five finalists will be announced.

Mt. Hebron graduate Ashley Bruns, who plays attack at the University of Florida, is also on the Watch List.
