Boys basketball: Long Reach closes regular season on high note

With playoffs on the horizon, Long Reach kept the ball rolling in the right direction Thursday.

Devaughn Nowlin led the way with 19 points and Long Reach withstood a substantial third-quarter run by visiting Reservoir to earn a 48-40 victory. It was the fourth straight win for the Lightning and sixth victory over the last seven games to close the regular season.

"We were preaching to the kids all week that we needed two wins this week to keep ourselves in a positive mindset going into the playoffs," Long Reach coach Al Moraz Jr. said. "We're going to have our hands full in an extremely tough 2A South region, but we're getting healthy and have some confidence now."

Long Reach (12-7, 13-9) put Reservoir (9-10, 11-11) in an early 11-2 hole and held the lead for the entire first half. Reservoir did bounce back a little, cutting the deficit to four, 20-16, by halftime.

But the Gators big move didn't come until the last three minutes of the third quarter. Trailing 31-24, Reservoir closed the quarter with an 8-0 spurt to take its first lead of the game, 32-31.

Even as the Gator lead grew to three points early in the fourth quarter, however, Long Reach never panicked.

"We took a timeout and changed our defensive pressure a little bit," Moraz said. "Really, though, we just talked about how it's a game of runs and they had just gone on theirs. Now it was our turn."

Long Reach outscored Reservoir 16-5 over the final six minutes. In addition to Nowlin, Darryl Taylor (9 points) and Daquan Hargrove (7 points, 8 rebounds) also had big nights.

In the loss, Reservoir's Joey Usher (13 points) was the only one to reach double figures.
