There were points during Wednesday's match-up with Mt. Hebron where Atholton struggled with its shooting, several times going minutes without a field goal.

Yet, through the droughts, the Raiders did keep one thing consistent - everyone made their foul shots.

Atholton (5-2, 8-2) hit 21 of 24 from the stripe on the evening, including going 8-8 in the final three minutes, to hold off Mt. Hebron (4-3, 5-3) on the road, 60-56.

"We take free throw shooting very serious in practice," said Atholton senior Gavin Stephenson, who hit six of the final eight foul shots and finished with a game-high 23 points. "We'll run and then get some free throws up to simulate the big shots in the fourth quarter when we really need them. It definitely paid off (tonight)."

The Raiders struggled at the onset, making just two shots from the floor in the first quarter to fall behind by three, 9-6. But as the offense struggled, the team's defense picked up the slack.

From the 3:11 mark of the first quarter to the 2:56 mark of the second, Mt. Hebron didn't score a single point. That Viking drought had a lot to do with the team's eight turnovers during that stretch and it allowed Atholton to seize the lead.

By the time Colin Dohner made his lay-up with just less than three minutes left before halftime, the Raiders had established an 18-9 lead.

Atholton ended up taking a 23-18 lead into the break.

The Raider shooting woes began creeping back in during the third quarter and Mt. Hebron again took advantage. In the middle of the period, the Vikings went on a 9-0 run over the span of three minutes to take a 36-31 lead.

At the end of the third quarter it was 39-37 Mt. Hebron.

Things went back and forth in the early stages of the fourth, with Darren Fitzpatrick (14 points) making a few big baskets for the Raiders and the combination of Deonte Moses (22 points) and Malik Gilmore (10) doing most of the damage for the Vikings.

With 2:54 left, following a lay-up by Gilmore, the game was tied at 50.

But that's when Atholton began its push to victory, getting to the foul line and knocking down the shots. Stephenson made six from the line, Brian McMahon made two and Ethan Shapiro added a lay-up as the Raiders closed the game on a 10-6 run.

The win keeps Atholton within shouting distance of county leaders Centennial (7-0 in county) and Marriotts Ridge (6-1) in the standings.

"Before this game there were three teams tied for third and to close that gap on Marriotts Ridge and Centennial we had to get this one," Stephenson said.
