Heavy afternoon rains prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning in Howard County until 6:15 p.m. Monday, July 25.
County Department of Fire and Rescue Service Battalion Chief Gordon Wallace said drivers need to be especially cautious during and immediately after the storm.
"The biggest thing is not to try to cross any water in your vehicle," he explained. "You have no idea of the actual depth of the water that you're crossing and it does not take a whole lot of water to begin to move a car and disable it."
The fire department assisted Carroll County officials in freeing a vehicle stuck in water in Carroll County, near the Howard County line, at about 2:30 p.m., Wallace said.
Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Schroen said "a couple of traffic lights are out" throughout the county due to the storm. As of 3:30 p.m., she said, police had received no reports of serious accidents or damage resulting from the weather.
