Two teens hit by vehicle in Harper's Choice released from hospital

Two Wilde Lake High School students have been released from a hospital after being struck by a car Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Harper's Choice.

Erica Renee Butler and Latesha Monica Carter, both 15, of Columbia, were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, in Baltimore, according to Howard County police. They were in stable condition Thursday afternoon, police said. On Saturday morning, an email from the school said both girls "were home and doing well."

The collision happened near the intersection of Cedar Lane and Grand Banks Road at about 4:51 p.m. Police said a Lexus ES330 was headed south on Cedar Lane when it hit the two girls, who were crossing the road. There is no crosswalk there, police said.

Police say pedestrian error contributed to the collision. Investigators noted that it was also raining heavily at the time.

The driver, Mary Koutrelakos, 79, of Ellicott City, was not injured, police said.
