Laurel Woods Elementary School teacher fends off attacker

A Laurel Woods Elementary School teacher leaving work fended off a man who approached her from behind, according to school officials and the Howard County Police Department.

The incident happened at about 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, near the intersection of North Laurel Road and Bridle Path Lane. The teacher, who had parked a short distance away off school property, had opened her car door when the man came up to her and demanded she get inside the vehicle.

The teacher then turned around, pushed past the man and ran to North Laurel Road, screaming for help, according to an email Laurel Woods school officials sent to parents on Thursday afternoon. The man then ran up a hill toward a nearby apartment complex, the email said.

School officials have been told that extra police patrols will be in the area for student dismissal, after-school and evening activities. The police department will also be provided with a weekly list of evening activities, the email said.
