National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Howard County is hosting a program Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center in Columbia, titled "The Risks of Undiagnosed Mental Health Issues in Teens and Young Adults."
The first week in October is Mental Awareness Week, the peak time for NAMI's public education and community outreach activity.
The program at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center will feature David and Sara Tagget of Ellicott City, who will speak on their experience of losing their daughter, Katrina. A 2005 graduate of Centennial High School, Katrina "Kara" Tagget was a senior at Michigan State University when she committed suicide three years ago.
"Our hope is that by sharing Kara's story we can help prevent other families from the tragedy of suicide and support those families who survive the loss due to suicide," Kara's family said in a news release.
The program is free and open to the public.
