Two teens injured in Mount Airy after vehicle crashes, rolls over

One teen was critically injured and another hospitalized after the car they were in crashed Wednesday, Dec. 21, in Mount Airy.

The crash happened at about 10:18 p.m. at the intersection of Route 144 and Bahner Court, when a 2011 Honda Accord headed east on Route 144 went off the road, collided with a telephone pole, spun, struck a tree and then overturned, according to the Howard County Police Department.

The driver, a 17-year-old male from Sykesville, was listed in critical but stable condition Thursday morning at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police spokeswoman Elizabeth Schroen said. Police are not releasing his identity because of the possibility that he will be charged.

His passenger, Jessie Michael Byrd, 16, of Sykesville, was taken to the same hospital and was listed in stable condition, Schroen said.

Police said speed and the wet road contributed to the crash.
