Mountain bike skills course to open in Rockburn Branch Park June 2

The mountain bike skills course in Rockburn Branch Park in Elkridge is scheduled to officially open Saturday, June 2, following a 10 a.m. grand opening ceremony.

Named the Rockburn Skills Park, the course includes three downward trails, each designed for mountain bikers of varying skill levels, and one upward return trail. Also a part of the skills park is the mountain bike pump track, which already opened last fall.

The county Department of Recreation and Parks provided the land for the project, which was funded through donations raised by the Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts. Volunteers from MORE and world-class trail builders and designers from the International Mountain Bicycling Association began construction on April 23.

"We wanted to provide a place where riders of any age and ability could practice and improve their confidence and skills including basic handling, turning, braking, climbing and descending," Melanie Nystrom, the MORE liaison for the Rockburn Skills Park, said in a statement.

She added: "We selected Rockburn because of its existing infrastructure and the fact that it has an existing trail system that connects with Patapsco State Park, considered to be one of the preeminent mountain biking destinations in the Mid-Atlantic region because of its vast trail system."
