A Laurel Woods Elementary second-grade student struck by a vehicle on North Laurel Road after school Tuesday has been released from the hospital.
The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. during dismissal, according to an email from the school. The student is a walker, said assistant principal Rhonda Inskeep, and was on his way home.
According to Howard County police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn, the 7-year-old ran onto the road from behind a parked car and was struck by a Chevy HHR traveling at a low rate of speed. The driver stopped immediately and called 911, Llewellyn said.
In an email sent to parents, Laurel Woods principal Susan Brown said that the school nurse was on hand and reported that the student was alert, talking and able to move his fingers and toes.
Llewellyn said the boy was transported to Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, where he was diagnosed with minor injuries. He was released last night, Inskeep said.
Inskeep said she believed the student was with a group of friends at the time of the accident. Since other students witnessed the event, Brown said the school would have counseling support available for any students who needed to talk about the incident.
An investigation is ongoing, Llewellyn said, but police do not anticipate filing charges against the driver.
