A Columbia woman was sentenced to 30 days in jail Tuesday, June 28, for charges stemming from a February 23 incident where she purposefully drove her car into her boyfriend and then fled the scene.
According to charging documents, Sharon Yvette Jones, 48, of 6365 Wind Rider Way, had been arguing about fidelity with 22-year-old Jamal Ali Williams when she ran into him with her vehicle while in a hotel parking lot.
"Ms. Jones did not slow down or attempt to avoid Mr. Williams as she struck him," charging documents state. An observer saw "Williams impact the hood… continue over the windshield, impact the roof of the Cadillac, followed by the trunk of the Cadillac, before landing on the asphalt parking lot," according to the documents.
Williams sustained lacerations to his legs and arms and was taken to Howard County General Hospital.
Though she was indicted for first- and second-degree assault, Jones struck a deal with the Howard County State's Attorney's office and pleaded guilty to failing to remain at the scene of a collision that resulted in bodily injury. The other charges will be dropped.
Howard County Circuit Court Judge Timothy McCrone sentenced Jones to one year in jail, suspending all but 30 days, to be served on weekends starting July 16. In addition, she was placed on 18 months probation and was ordered to attend a domestic violence counseling program.
