County to hold workshop on fair housing, landlord-tenant relationships

The county is holding its fourth annual free workshop Tuesday, July 26 to address fair housing laws and landlord-tenant relationship issues.

The "Landlord & Tenant Rental Rights & Responsibilities" workshop, hosted by Howard County Housing, the Office of Human Rights and the Office of Consumer Affairs, will be held at the East Columbia Branch library from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Residents interested in attending are asked to call 410-313-3441 or e-mail housing@howardcountymd.gov to reserve a seat.

Topics that will be discussed at the workshop include: security deposits and reservation fees, occupancy monitoring and lease enforcement, reasonable accommodations and legal solutions for lease disputes. The issues are all impacted by the county's fair housing law.

"As a housing provider and a federal grant program administrator focused on the provision of housing and other associated services, Howard County Housing is charged with affirmatively furthering fair housing," Howard County Housing Director Stacy L. Spann said in a statement. "While enforcement is necessary, education is the best tool to inform the community and industry professionals of their responsibility to make lawful fair housing decisions."
