Company selected to complete Lake Elkhorn dredging

Dredging in Lake Elkhorn will resume next summer, Columbia Association staff announced Monday, Aug. 8.

According to a news release, CA has chosen JND Thomas Co., Inc., a California-based company, to hydraulically dredge and mechanically dewater the Lake Elkhorn sediment for $3.2 million.

The starting date for resuming the dredging is June 2012.

JND Thomas Company, headquartered in Riverside, Calif., specializes in dredging, excavating, mechanical dewatering and habitat restoration. The company has completed projects across the country, including dredging in California, Colorado, Texas and Virginia.

According to its web site, JND Thomas's mission as a "steward of the planet" is to assist customers with "environmentally sensitive" solutions to their needs.

If dredging resumes in June 2012, it will be 18 months after CA's contract with Mobile Dredging and Pumping expired. Dredging of the 37-acre lake halted when Mobile, the company hired to dredge the lake, filed a $1 million lawsuit against CA in November 2010 for breach of contract, accusing CA of not paying for work performed or completing preliminary sediment surveys.

Mobile removed its equipment from the lake in mid-March.
