Howard County residents honored by McDaniel College

Dr. Alva "Buzz" Baker, of Sykesville, received the alumni professional achievement award from McDaniel College. He is a 1966 alumnus of Western Maryland (now McDaniel) College.

Presented annually during McDaniel's Homecoming, the alumni professional achievement award is presented to a graduate who has gained distinction in his/her chosen field or profession and whose accomplishments reflect admirably on McDaniel College.

He is currently director of McDaniel's Center for the Study of Aging and continues to teach in the college's Gerontology programs. Baker continues to work with hospice and teaches physicians how to become medical directors in long term care through the American Medical Directors Association.

Jerry Resh, of Eldersburg, received the Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame award from McDaniel College. He received a bachelor's degree in exercise science and physical education with a minor in education from McDaniel College in 1995 and master's degree in exercise science in 2006.

After college, he played baseball for several years in the South Penn Baseball League. Currently the physical education teacher at Piney Ridge Elementary School, in Sykesville, he served as baseball and golf coach at Century High School in Sykesville and is currently the assistant JV baseball coach at Westminster High School, in Westminster.
