Howard County residents receive awards

Jean Hurley, of Ellicott City, has been awarded the Denison Founders Scholarship at Denison University, in Granville, Ohio. The Denison Founders Scholarship approximates one-half tuition and is based on academic achievement, leadership and personal merit.

Nicole Leo, of Mount Airy, was hosted by the St. Francis University Science Outreach Center, in Loretto, Pa., with 16 other high school students between their junior-senior years on the campus of St. Francis University for the Science and the Art of Discovery Summer Academy, June 20-24. The program is a week-long experience which allowed students to conduct research and design a solution to a real world issue utilizing principles from green chemistry.

Xavier Gutierrez, of Elkridge, was hosted by the St. Francis University Science Outreach Center, in Loretto, Pa., with 13 other high school students between their sophomore-junior and junior-senior years on the campus of St. Francis University for the Environmental Engineering Design Summer Academy, June 27-July 1. The program is a week-long experience designed to provide an opportunity for high school students to experience the engineering design process.

Jennifer Warner, of Clarksville, participated in the College of New Jersey's Bonner Summer Fellows program, in Ewing, N.J. From July 10-24 24, Warner and 25 other students lived on campus and engaged in college-level coursework and community service in the Trenton area at Bonner community partner sites. She is a rising senior at River Hill High School.
