Rising senior at Francis Scott Key set to become school board's student representative

UNION BRIDGE — O'Reilly Miani, a member of the Class of 2013 at Francis Scott Key High School, will become the new student representative on the Carroll County Board of Education this week.

She will be installed as the student representative on June 13.

"I ran for student representative on the board because I saw it as the most effective way to help my classmates and gain valuable life experiences," she said in a school system release.

She has been involved in student government at FSK, and has served as the historian for the Student Government Association, treasurer of the Leo Club, and SGA representative to the National Honor Society. She was selected as a Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program nominee and attended the 2011 National Honor Society Leadership Conference.

She served as a delegate to the Maryland Association of Student Councils in 2011 and 2012. During the past session of the Maryland General Assembly, she lobbied for Senate Bill 660 in Annapolis — the measure that sought to codify the nonvoting student member position in Carroll County.

Miani's other activities at Francis Scott Key include performing in school talent shows and musicals, playing varsity and junior varsity volleyball and serving as a member of the school's debate team.

She's also a pianist who has won numerous awards in the Barnes-Ferencz Memorial Piano Competition, and was accepted into the National Piano Masters Guild with bronze and gold medals. She plans to continue playing the piano throughout college. She speaks Italian and Spanish.

She's a volunteer for Days End Horse Rescue Farm, works with the 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program, and is active in the Personal Progress Program in the Young Women's organization at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Over this past year, Miani shadowed the current student representative, Angela Bladen, who is also from FSK, to learn about the schedule and responsibilities of the student representative.
