Commissioners will discuss airport expansion Jan. 19, then vote Jan. 26

WESTMINSTER — The Board of County Commissioners will discuss the proposed expansion of the Carroll County Regional Airport in a public session on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 1:30 p.m., in the County Office Building, 225 N. Center St., Westminster, Room 311.

In September 2011, the Board postponed a decision on the proposed airport expansion in order to allow board members more time to gather information and study the benefits and drawbacks of such an expansion.

The proposal to expand the runway at the airport in order to accommodate larger aircraft has been the subject of debate for years. The federal government would fund the bulk of the $74 million project, but the county would be responsible for about 1.85 million — as well as other costs associated with the project.

After the September deferral, commissioners David Roush and Robin Frazier were charged with leading a study effort, and met with various businesses and organizations to discuss the proposal.

At the Jan. 19 session, the commissioners will hear public comment, and Roush and Frazier will report their findings to the board.

The commissioners noted that there will be no vote on Jan. 19, but a second session will be held on Jan. 26, at 10:45 a.m., also at the County Office Building. At that session, commissioners will hear public comment again — then vote on the airport expansion.
