Music Knights: Century High School warms up to band camp under new director

"Reset!"

The command sent groans through the 40-members of Century High School marching band as they turned to find their spots and begin the number again. In the middle of their first week of band camp, the students were immersed in memorizing music and learning new drills under the direction of Brian Coffill, Century's new band director.

"Everything is going good so far," Coffill said. "I like to be very involved and set high standards."

Emmet Eckman, 14, a freshman saxophone player, said he was enjoying his first year at band camp.

"It's very fun. It's very intense," Eckman said. "Learning how to march is totally new to me."

Though he didn't march his sophomore year, Alex Wedekind, a senior, is now a featured soloist on the mellophone.

"It can be challenging, but it's a lot of fun," Wedekind said, of band camp. "He [Coffill] has his own unique style."

As the marching band parent, Mary Lavlis helps wherever needed, from organizing picnics to taking uniforms to the dry cleaners. Her son, Matthew, is a sophomore trumpet player in the band and her daughter Samantha is a band graduate.

For Lavlis, the thrill is watching the show mature.

"It's amazing to me the process of coming together as individuals and then ending sort of like a team," Lavlis said. "We're very small but the kids work really hard and always perform really well."

Coffill would like to see the marching band grow in numbers.

"There's lots of room to grow," Coffill said. "I encourage more and more people to join."
