McKala Krauss, Miss Poppy 2012 of the American Legion Carroll Post 31, marked Memorial Day by attended the luncheon at the American Legion and formally presenting a poppy to Arnold "Skip" Amass, coordinator of the four-day program of events for the 145th Westminster observance of Memorial Day.
Krauss, the daughter of Jennifer and Dale Krauss, rode in the Memorial Day parade, attended the luncheon, which honored Navy SEAL Matthew Shipley, this year's speaker at the Memorial Day observance at the Westminster Cemetery.
For many years, the Carroll Post 31 has sponsored a young lady to represent "Miss Poppy" for the observance of Memorial Day. In the United States, the poppy is most often worn on Memorial Day.
Pat Davis, who is assisting the American Legion with the Miss Poppy program this year, noted that proceeds from the sale of the poppies aid needy and disabled veterans and assist their widows and orphans.
She said Krauss has raised "several hundred dollars" for veterans this year.
"She's (Krauss has) worked hard at this," said Amass of Krauss.
