Employees' ownership in companies benefits all

It was irritating to read and hear nothing on Labor Day except that our nation needs a jobs policy that honors labor as well as capitalists.

While not large in number, there are companies in the United States that honor workers by making them owners through an employee stock ownership plan or ESOP.

For the past 35 years, solid evidence proves that the vast majority of ESOP companies have outperformed non-ESOP companies, provided locally controlled jobs and, through ownership, built up retirement savings much larger than other employer sponsored retirement savings programs.

When will national leaders and national media wake up and see that expanding employee ownership in a clear-cut way will make employees capital owners?

It would also make U.S. companies better places to work and more competitive in our global economy.
