Big day for smaller standouts in Catonsville rec football program

The Catonsville Stars Football and Cheerleading program served up a feast for football fanatics last weekend, highlighted by a full plate of games on the artificial turf at Comet Stadium Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15.

"It was a huge success," said program president Bryan Wynn, of the weekend, which began with two games Friday night and kicked with nine games Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the final game kicking off at 8:30 p.m.

"We did well as a program. Our concessions did well. It was crazy," said Wynn a nine-year coaching veteran of the program who proudly noted that 29 members of Catonsville High School's undefeated team are products of the local recreation program.

Impressive defensive efforts by the home teams under the lights on Friday night started the homecoming weekend with a pair of shutout victories for Catonsville.

The 7-9 age group Federal team shutout Western Howard County and the 9-11 age group Federal team blanked Westminster.

Catonsville teams compete in both the Federal Division and American Division of the Mid-Maryland Youth Football and Cheer League.

Wynn noted Saturday's games featured music and introductions of the teams over the public address system while players ran through the smoke as their counterparts in the NFL often do.

There was even a tunnel, constructed by the shop class at Edmondson-Westside High School that Stars parent teaches, for the players to run out of.

"Everybody had a good time," Wynn said.

Saturday's event began with the 11-12 American team's defeat of Oakdale and ended with the 11-13 Federal team's overtime loss to Urbana.

In between, the 11-13 American team, 9-11 American team, 7-9 American team and 6-8 American team all defeated their counterparts from Oakdale Saturday.

Like their 11-13 Federal team, Catonsville's 8-10 Federal team lost by a point to Urbana.

The 6-8 Federal team defeated Urbana.

Wynn noted that even the 5-6 age group team, which had a bye Oct. 15, was able to display its talents on the artificial turf.

The team played an exhibition during halftime of the 8-10 American team's game against Urbana.
