Bump-outs to increase safety at Mellor and Bloomsbury avenues in Catonsville

Baltimore County will start construction next month to install bump-outs that will allow motorists turning from Mellor Avenue to see farther down Bloomsbury Avenue, said Keith Link, who manages traffic calming for the county.

"There's a bit of a sight distance problem pulling out of there today," said Link, who noted the speed limit on Bloomsbury Avenue at the intersection is 25 miles per hour.

"We're going to push the curb in a little bit as you come around the curve to allow people to pull out a little farther on Mellor to be able to see up and down the street."

The construction will also include changes that will act as a safeguard against people turning from Mellor Avenue and hitting a parked car, he said.

"The main problem is looking to the left (while) turning out of Mellor," Link said. "That's what we're mainly trying to improve."

Link said construction is expected to last two to three days and is not considered major.
