Catonsville High senior Rachel Schwaab and junior Deb Milani were the Catonsville Times Co-athletes of the Year. The three-sport athletes recently responded about some of their favorite things and superstitions from the past year.

Favorite Comet moments


Milani: Winning counties in lacrosse and beating Hereford in overtime in basketball.

Schwaab: Definitely winning the county championship in lacrosse and beating Dulaney three times this year.

Least favorite

Milani: Definitely losing in the state semifinals in lacrosse.

Schwaab: The loss to Perry Hall because it was the only blemish on the season until we lost to Severna Park.

Favorite athlete

Milani: Former Comet and University of Maryland lacrosse All-American and current Catonsville High coach Becky Clipp. "She is definitely one of the ones I look up to."

Schwaab: Nicklas Backstrom (Washington Capitals). "I'm a huge ice hockey fan."

Favorite sport to watch

Milani: Maryland basketball and lacrosse.

Schwaab: Ice hockey.


Milani: "Before lacrosse games I went home and took a little nap and I wore the same sports bra and black Under Armour socks and I get a big Gatorade. Once I started doing it, we started winning."

Schwaab: "I have my old (broken) lacrosse stick (from eighth and ninth grade) at every game. In basketball, it's the same as Mr. Mike (coach Mohler). I always sat in the same seat."


Favorite pro sports teams

Milani: Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens.

Schwaab: Washington Capitals, Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens.

Favorite food

Milani: Chicken Teriyaki and fast food.

Schwaab: Roast beef sub from Scittinos.

Coach with the most influence growing up

Milani: "All of my coaches have been great, but my dad, Mike, has always given us advice and told us what we were doing wrong."

Schwaab: "My dad, Eric, he coached me in basketball through elementary and middle school and he taught me everything about lacrosse."

Best thing about high school sports:

Milani: "There are so many good things about playing high school sports. You meet a lot of new people and its fun. I love all three sports I play."

Schwaab: "The best thing about high school sports is definitely all the people I got to meet and spending all the time with friends on and off the field."
