Former state Senator Nancy Murphy dies Dec. 30

Nancy Murphy, who represented District 12, which includes Arbutus and Catonsville, in the House of Delegates as well as in the Senate, died in her Catonsville home on Dec. 30, a day before her 82nd birthday.

In 1983, the lifelong Catonsville resident became the first woman elected to represent District 12 as a member of the House of Delegates.

Murphy served as a delegate until 1989 when she won election to the state Senate, a position she would hold until 1994.

Murphy had recently retired from the Maryland Parole Commission, her son, Mike Alagna, wrote in an email.

Before entering politics, Murphy attended the then Catonsville Senior High School and Catonsville Community College.

Murphy was involved in the schools, Scouts and sports of her children and could be found running the concessions stand at youth sporting events, Alagna added.

Murphy is survived by her daughter, Julea, two sons, Michael and Mark Alagna, four grandchildren, Michael, Kelly, Jason and Madison, and two sisters, Audrey Whitehead and Joanne Murphy.

A funeral service will be held at Catonsville United Methodist Church at 6 Melvin Ave. at 2 p.m. on Jan. 5.
