BGE tips to prepare for possible power outages

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, which is preparing for the possibility of weather-related outages late this weekend and into early next week, is urging residents to have a plan in place, should they be without power for an extended period of time.

Customers are encouraged to takeds  the following steps to prepare for extended outages:

Stay informed — Stay aware of changing weather conditions and plan ahead. Have a battery-powered radio with a weather band so you can hear emergency information when the power is out.

Make a plan — Discuss and document an emergency plan with those in your care that includes alternative arrangements should you need to leave your home. Make provisions for special needs of any family member such as the elderly, handicapped, medically affected or infants. If you are dependent on electric-powered medical equipment, seek alternate arrangements in case electric service is interrupted. For special outage planning information, call 800-685-0123.

Make a list of emergency phone numbers (including 877-778-2222 to report an outage to BGE) and keep a personal telephone book and one corded phone or a cell phone on hand.

Build an emergency kit, keeping in mind supplies for children, those with special needs and pets. Have the the following items available:

Flashlights – not candles

Fresh batteries

Battery-operated clock radio

Corded telephone

Fully charged cell phone

Nonperishable foods

Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation)

First-aid kit

Local maps


Customers should consider filling the fuel tanks of their vehicles, in case a power outage affects service to neighborhood gas stations.

Customers who rely on well water, should consider filling a bathtub with water in advance of severe weather.

After long periods of heavy rain

In cases where flooding affects equipment, customers are responsible for all wiring, pipe, appliances, breaker boxes and any other gas or electric-related equipment or service inside the home or business.

Customers are urged to consider the following safety tips:

• Proceed with care if you have experienced flooding in your basement and or other areas of your home

• Do not enter a room with standing water, particularly if the water covers electrical outlets or electrical cords that are plugged into outlets

• Ensure the electrical system is shut off before entering a flooded room or basement

• Do not attempt to shut off your electrical system if you have to stand in water or on a wet floor to do so

• If you experienced flooding, do not turn on any lights or appliances without having a inspection performed by a licensed electrician and by a registered plumber with a gasfitter's license for gas appliances.
