The Bally Total Fitness clubs in Lansdowne and Catonsville are among 171 purchased nationwide by the parent company of L.A. Fitness.

Fitness International announced the acquisition of the Bally Total Fitness clubs, including all 12 locations in Maryland, on Nov. 28, two days before the parties expected to finalize the sale.

"We believe that members will see a smooth transition," he said.

A representative of L.A. Fitness, which opened its first gym in California in 1984, who was at the Catonsville facility on Baltimore National Pike Dec. 5, said all inquiries about the effect of the sale on club members should be directed to the corporate office.

Calls to the corporate headquarters were not returned.

The sale comes only five months after Bally Total Fitness opened a 46,000-square-foot club at 3551 Washington Blvd. that features a three-lane pool, child-care facility, more than 200 pieces of cardio equipment and several workout studios.

Before its acquisitions, the California-based franchise which operates in 21 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada, had four locations in Maryland.
