Towson High senior attacker Morgan Young's signature spin move to the goal wasn't very effective on Thursday night at Loch Raven.
The Naval Academy recruit from Anneslie was called for charging twice the first two times she tried it in the contest. She also drew a yellow card for a dangerous check attempt and was denied on a couple of free positions.
Yet, with the game on the line in the second overtime period, she made an even quicker pirouette, bolted through the 8-meter arc and rippled the net with 29 seconds remaining to give the Generals a taut 12-11 triumph over the Raiders.
Young's second goal of the game completed a comeback for Towson (7-0), which trailed, 5-0, less than 10 minutes into the first period before rallying.
"I was getting a little frustrated," she said. "I knew I just had to keep my head up. Once I got in there, I knew it was going in."
Still, it took a game-high fourth goal by Kelly Lacy, on an assist by senior midfield mate Hannah Wohltmann, in the last :04 of regulation to give Young the opportunity send the game into overtime.
That clutch goal came on a restart behind the Loch Raven goal, as Towson overcame a 10-8 deficit over the final 3:40 to tie the score.
The Generals looked dazed and confused early when the Raiders (5-3) sliced through the defense for point-blank shots, scoring on four of their first five shots.
Freshman midfielder Lindsey Farrell started the Loch Raven early run that also included goals by senior midfielder Christie Moyer and junior attacker Meredith Moore.
"We looked like we were asleep," Towson coach Deedee Franke said. "And the goals they scored just looked so pretty."
Towson started chipping away, pulling to within a goal at halftime and finally spurting ahead on a Lacy goal at the 21:50 mark of the second period.
"I think we wore down a little in the second half," Loch Raven coach Tracy Hanley said. "We struggle with numbers, and we were tired from playing Bryn Mawr and Hereford this week."
Trailing, 8-7, the Raiders mustered a 3-0 run on goals by Moore, senior attacker Maggie Wagner and Moyer to build a 10-8 lead they couldn't hold because Lacy scored twice.
