Carney: Family marks milestone birthday with Italian feast

Happy New Year, fellow Carney dwellers!

Now that the holiday decorations have been packed away until next year, along with those nifty reusable gift bags, let's check up on what's happening in our neighborhood.

First, a special birthday:

Vince Deiaco celebrated his 90th birthday at a surprise party hosted by his four children and their families at the home of his daughter Debbie and her husband, Ed Lohr, of Parkville, on Jan. 14. Vince, a longtime parishioner and volunteer at St. Isaac Jogues Church, who now lives at the home of his son Jim in Carroll County, had expected a small family gathering but the surprise was that many friends from St. Isaac Jogues Parish had been invited to share in the scrumptious Italian feast served before the birthday cake was served.

And a very special anniversary:

Happy but belated wishes to Joe and Ruth Sabatino, of Woodcroft, whe celebrated 68 years of wedded bliss on Jan. 1.

Although we aren't quite through January and don't know what the rest of winter holds weatherwise, let's give a special thank you in advance to our cheerful and good-natured postal carrier, Alan Phillips, who is on the job whatever the weather. I recall one of those awful slippery days last winter, when I saw the mail truck approaching my house, I slid cautiously up to the icy curb toward the mailbox, and Alan very kindly stepped out of his truck and handed it to me as I hung onto the mailbox post to for dear life.

Angel's Wings, a new carryout restaurant that opened three months ago at 1803 Taylor Ave., right next door to Pappas Restaurant, is not just about yummy chicken wings, but offers a menu of mouth-watering choices, including sandwiches, burgers, subs and entrées, catering services and platters. David Micozzi, now a marketing associate with Sysco Food Service and a chef himself, highly recommends Angel's Wings. I ordered a delicious eight-ounce marinated chicken sandwich there last week and talked to one of the owners, and I urge you to check it out. Angels Wings" is open seven days a week.
