The Maryland SPCA recently celebrated its 500th Pet Adoption and One-Year Anniversary at the Satellite Adoption Center at White Marsh Mall.
Located on the upper level next to JC Penney, the adoption center opened in November 2013 for the holiday season with the hopes of continuing if the community response was positive. One year later and operating only on the weekends, the satellite location has been warmly welcomed into the community and currently over 500 animals (mostly cats and kittens) have found homes and families!
On hand for the event, the satellite centers first adopted cat, Lucy, was accompanied by her happy family, Jason and Rachael Wettengel of Perry Hall.
"She makes us smile," a Rachael said.
The 500th kitten to be adopted, Sapphire, was also in attendance. Maryland SPCA Executive Director Aileen Gabbey said, "In order to get into the community more, we are bringing the animals to the people".
Judging from the results, this outlook has been a recipe for success and a win/win arrangement for community members and their animals. Maryland SPCA Board of Directors President Elizabeth Drigotas posed for a picture with Aileen cuddling the first adopted cat, Lucy, who was presented with a new collar with a Pet ID tag reading, "I was the 1st adoption at Project Adopt." Sapphire, too, was presented with a new collar that says, "I was the 500th adoption at Project Adopt."
The Maryland SPCA's main adoption center is located on Falls Road, more than 15 miles away. Project Adopt is open Fridays from 1 to 7 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Community support has allowed the Maryland SPCA to continue to remain open during the last year, so please continue to support this worthy cause. If you'd like to help in another way besides adopting, the SPCA has a "Wish List" which includes an immediate need for the following food items: wet, canned dog and cat food (store brand with gravy), unopened dry dog and cat food, and Gerber jarred baby food, Stage 2 in beef, chicken turkey or lamb with gravy in 2.5 oz jars only.
You can see the entire list on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com and search MD SPCA. Wish list items may be delivered to the adoption center during business hours. If you have questions, call 410-235-8826 ext 135. Thank you in advance for your help!
