Wrestling: Eight pins is enough for Hereford to roll past Perry Hall

Host Hereford won all eight of its matches by pin and dropped its second team in the same week from the unbeaten dual meet ranks.

Hereford's 48-26 victory on Thursday night handed Perry Hall its first loss in seven matches.

That impressive triumph came two days after a 43-26 victory over previously unbeaten Sparrows Point (29-1).

Hereford improved to 17-2 overall and 12-0 in the league. It's only losses were to Owings Mills and Urbana in an early-season tournament.

"We've come a long way since the beginning of the year and I think we can surprise people," senior Joe Ramsel said.

Ramsel, wrestling at 145, had one of three third-period pins and his triumph gave the Bulls an insurmountable 42-23 lead with two bouts left.

"It's kind of expected of me since I've had four years on varsity," he said.

Senior Mike Pusloski (220) and freshman Billy Hess (152) also had third-period pins.

Hess' fall of Nate LIberto was most dramatic.

He trailed Liberto, 8-4 after the Gator took him to his back late in the second period, but he responded with a pin 26 seconds in the final two minutes.

Sophomore Brock Turnbaugh (195) and freshman Dylan Gray (132) had second-period pins, but Gray's was the turning point of the match.

He was trailing Perry Hall's Sean Taylor 4-0 after the first period, when he rallied for a pin 31 seconds into the second period.

That turned a slim 24-23 lead into a 30-23 advantage

Charlie Stafford (138) followed with a first-period pin for a 36-23 bulge that Ramsel followed with the clincher.

Joe Miller (185) and Mike Swiger (285) had first-period pins for Hereford earlier in the match.

The tone of the match was set by Hereford's Luke Wickiser in the first match of the evening.

He lost to Pat Clemons, 16-3, but Bull coach Ron Causey was happy he hung in there six minutes.

"His job was to stay off his back and he did," Causey said.

The most impressive victory of the night came from Perry Hall junior Shaun Murphy (126), who secured his fall in 22 seconds.

Jordan Rhudy (112) was the only other Gator to win by pin.

Undefeated Gator sophomore Zeke Salvo (106), ranked second in the state, scored a 7-1 decision over sophomore Anthony Genco, who was coming off a title at a tournament at John Carroll.

E.J. Grendel (120) earned an 11-0 decision for Perry Hall, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bull juggernaut.

"Perry Hall is a good team, but the ball bounced our way tonight," Causey said. "The same thing could happen if we wrestled them again and the ball could bounce their way."

But, from the outse, the Bull grapplers had more bounce in their step.

"We came ready to rock and roll and we rocked and rolled," Causey said. "You can't ask for more."
