Warm winter weather does a student body good.
Relay Elementary School principal Heidi Miller said allowing students to have outdoor recess makes for more productive students.
"The fresh air and a little bit of sunshine really helps the kids," Miller said. "Our students are staying focused."
Miller added that the lack of delays and closures this winter has helped students at the school on Selford Road maintain a daily routine.
"Routine is so important for children," Miller said. "The more often we can keep children on a predictable schedule, it's better for them and their learning."
The unusual temperatures have also facilitated the installation of new windows and doors at the school, Miller said.
Crews have spent weekends installing new windows and will soon add new doors that will add natural light and keep the school secure, Miller said.
Installation could be completed within a few weeks, Miller noted.
The school schedule has had only two closures this year, both coming in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene Aug. 27 according to Baltimore County Public Schools spokesman Charles Herndon.
But Herndon said the official closing date for county schools is still June 14, even though that schedule includes the seven extra days the school system builds into its schedule for unexpected closings.
A decision on when school will end this spring likely won't come until after spring break. The break begins after the school day ends March 30. Schools reopen April 10.
"We still have a little bit of winter left," Herndon said. "I would counsel people not to start counting their vacation days yet."
