Riverview Elementary students pitch in a little, raise a lot

A year after raising $616.33 for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, the students at Riverview Elementary School topped that amount by nearly 5 percent, school PTA president Teressa Davies said.

The students raised $645.20 in October by dropping change into buckets stationed in each of the school's classrooms for the school's second annual Penny Pitch, Davies said.

Dawn Chalk-Graf's first-grade class raised the most money, bringing in $111.87, Davies said.

Since only a small participation prize is awarded at the end of the project, the students donate the money just to help children in need, not for a reward, Davies pointed out.

This year, each of the students received jelly bracelets from the children's hospital for completing the project, Davies said.

"We usually don't do prizes for this event," Davies said. "It's just kids enjoying helping other kids before Christmas."
