Arbutus and Lansdowne schools mark 90th American Education Week

American Education Week began with hopes it would raise awareness about the importance of public education, according to the National Education Association website.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 14, area schools will celebrate the 90th American Education Week with the following activities:

Arbutus Middle School – 5525 Shelbourne Road, 410-887-1402. Visits by parents and guardians welcome during the school day, 8:10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Special activities planned between 8 a.m. and noon Nov. 15 for grade six, Nov. 16 for grade seven and Nov. 17 for grade eight.

Baltimore Highlands Elementary School – 4200 Annapolis Road, 410-887-0919

Visits by parents and guardians welcome 8:25-11:30 a.m. Nov. 14 for pre-kindergarten and communication and learning support students; Nov. 15 for grades one and two; Nov. 16 for grades three and five; and Nov. 17 for grade 4 and kindergarten. Nov. 18 is open to all grades.

Spirit Week will include:

Nov. 14: School Spirit Day.

Nov. 15: Career Day. Students dress as what they want to be when they grow up.

Nov. 16: College T-shirt day.

Nov. 17: Mix-up Day. Students wear mismatched clothes or inside-out clothing.

Nov. 18: Purple Friday.

Teachers of six classes at the school have planned special community outreach projects for their students next week. Projects include preparing food for Our Daily Bread and for Helping Hands, collecting nonperishable food items for Maryland Food Bank, making small gift items for residents of Maryland Baptist Aged Home in west Baltimore, creating a poster on American Education Week to display in local post office and making and sending cards to soldiers overseas.

Nov. 17 – Student of the month assembly 10 a.m.

Nov. 15: Lansdowne Advisory Board to host "How Do I Stand Out in a Sea of Job Applicants?" for student interns and work-study students. An engineering workshop will also be held for all interested students.

Nov. 17: Mock interviews by 50 community professionals for seniors.

Nov. 18: Financial seminar by First Financial Credit Union.
