Last-minute goals decide summer lacrosse champion

Little Miss Sunshine was crowned champion of the Bel Air Women's Summer Lacrosse League after a come-from-behind 10-9 victory over Blue Moon Thursday night at Rockfield Park's Ewing Street Field.

It was the final night of play for the season.

Little Miss Sunshine took a 5-4 lead into the half, but Blue Moon reeled off five unanswered goals in the second half to take a 9-5 lead. The teams then traded goals a minute apart, keeping Blue Moon ahead 9-6, but Little Miss Sunshine added a goal with 9:07 to play to close within two, 9-7.

Neither team scored over the next six minutes, setting up a dramatic three-minute finish by Little Miss Sunshine.

Julia Schrof netted her own goal of the contest with 2:53 to play and Sara Pippen then, with 25 seconds left, scored on a free position shot to tie the game at 9-9.

Shilpa Das then scored off another free position shot with just 13 seconds to play and put Little Miss Sunshine in the win column.

Das finished with a pair of goals, as did Morgan Grannas, Marisa Braungart and Pippen. Meghan Najewicz also had a goal in the win and Schrof added one assist in addition to her lone goal.

Gabby Antinozzi paced Blue Moon with three goals and one assist, while Kelley Duncan and Kelly Kemper netted two goals each. Meghan Welch and Anna Pollitt added single goals for Blue Moon.

Little Miss Sunshine goalie Brittany MacKnew picked up the win in goal with six saves, while Erin Dent (three saves) and Alicia McCarty (one save) split halves for Blue Moon.

In the league's consolation game, there were two problems: pre-game lightning and lack of players.

Black Out was a winner when Save the Ta-ta's (Pink) failed to field enough players. Following a 30-minute delay for the lightning, the two teams mixed and played three, 10-minute periods. The team wearing pinnies defeated the non-pinny team, 11-2.
