Flood cleanup continued primarily in Port Deposit throughout the day Sunday, although Havre de Grace also worked to get back to normal.
Most of Port Deposit's downtown area was still off-limits to residents, town administrator Ray Heinze said Sunday afternoon.
"We expect some reoccupation later today," he said. "There is still substantial work on the north side, which is where we were hit the hardest, and utilities have not [returned] today. We are asking citizens to please be patient. The reason we have had success to this point as much as we have is citizens have been so cooperative."
He said the town's north side, south side and Tome's Landing were the areas hardest hit by the torrential remains of Tropical Storm Lee, which dumped rain throughout the Susquehanna River region last week.
"We are certainly in the recovery phase. We are working closely with several utilities, one being Delmarva Power, Cecil County Department of Public Works and Artesian Water," he said. "The water receded earlier than anticipated so we were able to get started a little earlier."
The town's website had a message Sunday telling residents they must be cleared by town hall to enter any area. Parts of South Main Street and High Street have been cleared for access, the message said.
Linda Ploener, of Harford County's Emergency Operations Center, said Havre de Grace is also getting back to normal.
"As of yesterday, the evacuated residents were told they could go back in and I know they were moving the residents from Citizens [Care Center]," she said on Sunday. "BGE is down there working pretty much nonstop. They have got about 80 percent of the residents back on yesterday afternoon."
Ploener said other than that, cleanup continues to go better than expected last week.
"I know they are down to 23 gates on the Conowingo Dam," she said.
As of 2:45 p.m. Sunday, 21 gates were open and the river flow was 311,000 cubic feet per second.
