The Havre de Grace Warriors had to settle for a consolation-round victory at their own event Saturday, as they were bumped out of the running with an opening-round, 16-2 loss to Conwell Egan at the James R. Harris Memorial Tournament. In the following contest, the Warriors thumped Fallston, 14-1.
The Warriors (5-3) struck first in the opening-round matchup with the Conwell Egan team from Fairless Hills, Pa., scoring twice in the top of the second inning. Their opponents answered with a six-run rally in the bottom half of the inning. Conwell Egan went on to post two runs in the third, three in the fourth and capped things off with five tallies in the fifth.
The game was called after five innings under the 10-run mercy rule.
Havre de Grace's Riley Arnold had a single and one RBI in the loss, while Kelsey McRoberts ripped a base hit, earned one walk and scored one run. Dana Teufer had a bunt single and scored once.
In their second contest, the Warriors came back with a 14-1 victory over the Fallston Cougars.
Playing as the visiting team, Havre de Grace scored once in the top of the first, but Fallston tied the game with a run of its own in the bottom part of the inning. Havre de Grace began to run away in the next inning, scoring three times, then added another five tallies in the third. The Warriors plated three runs in the fourth, and wrapped things up with a pair of runs in the fifth.
This game was also ended after five innings under the 10-run mercy rule.
Havre de Grace's Hailey Bethke led the Warriors at the plate, blasting a pair of home runs, one of which carried over the outfield fence, while the other was an in-the-park homer to dead center field. Megan Thompson went 3-for-4 with three singles and two RBIs in the victory, while Rebecca Ashman was 2-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. Emily Lewis went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one stolen base, while Taylor Smith was 3-for-3 with one run. Arnold went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, while McRoberts was 1-for-1 with three runs and two stolen bases. Allison Lewis was 1-for-1 with two runs and one RBI and Kayla Vaughn knocked in two runs with a base hit. Teufer also scored a run.
Arnold went the distance on the mound, holding Fallston to five hits, striking out one and issuing one walk in her first varsity pitching win.
Tech set down in finals
The Harford Tech Cobras were knocked out of the finals at Saturday's James R. Harris Softball Tournament in Havre de Grace with a 12-2 loss to the first-place Conwell Egan squad.
Down 2-0 after two innings, the Cobras, playing as the visiting squad, cut their deficit in half with one run in the top of the third, but the Conwell Egan lineup answered in the home half of the inning with two more runs. Harford Tech scored its final run in the fifth, while Conwell Egan plated two in the fourth and scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to go up 12-2.
The Cobras, who managed just three base hits in the loss, advanced to the title game with a 5-4 win over Fallston.
