Aberdeen man arrested in shooting Saturday, held without bail

An Aberdeen man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he shot another man in the city Saturday night.

Richard Evans, 24, of the first block of Mount Royal Avenue, is accused of shooting Arthonis Jones Jr., 42, in the abdomen during a fight in the first block of Swan Street at about 11:34 p.m. Saturday, the Aberdeen Police Department said in a news release issued late Monday.

Police said the two men were in a fight, during which Evans allegedly fired two shots at Jones. Evans then fled in a black Honda Element.

Jones was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was listed in stable condition Monday, according to a police press release.

Evans was apprehended at 2:08 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was taken into custody without incident, according to the release.

He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, having a handgun on his person and using a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.

After his arrest, Evans was ordered held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center by the District Court Commissioner. He appeared before District Court Judge Susan Hazlett for a bail review hearing Monday afternoon and the judge ordered he continue to be held without bail.

Evans has been in Harford County for six years and has two daughters, according to Public Defender Lynne McChrystal. He also lives with a friend for whom he is a caretaker and completed ninth grade, McChrystal added.

She requested a reasonable bail be set although she said the charges were "extremely serious."

Assistant State's Attorney Vernon Gentile asked for him to be held without bail, but in the event a bail was set, recommended $200,000.

In a 2010 case, Evans was found guilty of second-degree assault, according to Maryland court records.
