The Santa's Sleigh 5K delivered the first Harford County victories to two outstanding distance-runners Saturday — Darcy McDonald and Greg Cauller.
The two were the top finishers among 223 runners on a course at Harford Community College. The fourth annual race was sponsored by the Arena Club to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County.
McDonald, who moved to Abingdon recently to work as a school psychologist, won the women's race in course-record time of 18:06. The former Dickinson College standout, whose personal 5K best is 16:24, finished fifth overall in the field and bettered the women's record by 13 seconds.
Heide Swarts of Belcamp finished second in 19:38, and Jennifer Bouffard of Fallston, third in 20:50.
Cauller, one of the most successful runners in the mid-Atlantic over the past 30 years, won the men's race in 17:02. The 52-year-old York, Pa., resident has competed three times in Harford races, finishing second in the Bel Air Town Run in 2005. He led a one-two masters finish Saturday, with Jerry Henderson of Bel Air taking second in 17:12. Zach Flores of Abingdon was third in 17:33.
Age group winners were Alex Stevenson (21:31) and Sophia Kudla (22:52) in under-13; Noah Kudla (19:34) and Nicki Iacaruso (23:36) in 13-19; Eric Nelson (18:20) and Brittany Freyer (21:15) in 20-29; Jeff Damiano (17:50) and Julie Bacso (21:09) in 30-39; Kirk Ingold (19:23) and Teri Welsh (21:09) in 40-49; Courtland Howard (19:10) and Nancy Hill (23:30) in 50-59; and George Raley (21:43) and Janet Miller (36:16) in over-60.
In other road races...
David Stevenson of Abingdon ran 3:06:16 in the Rock 'N' Roll Las Vegas Marathon Dec. 4, placing 17th in the 35-39 age group. He finished 80th overall among 2,380.
Lorrie Chieffo of Bel Air placed sixth in her age group in the Rehoboth Beach Seashore Half-Marathon Dec. 10 in 1:43:16. Other Harford runners among the 637 finishers were Anneliese Carbone, 1:51:10; James Borchelt, 1:58:17; Ken Szymanski, 1:58:52; and Nina Smeltzer, 2:04:09.
Marge Rosasco of Joppa placed fifth among the women in the BRRC Masters 5K in 23:29 Dec. 4 in Sparks. Mark Rosasco was fourth overall in 21:35. Serge Arbona led the men in 19:10 and Denise Knickman, the women in 20:34.

Wes Jacobs of Aberdeen was named Frostburg Athlete of the Week after winning the 500-meter dash at West Virginia University Dec 3. He ran a personal best of 1:07:69 and qualified for the ECAC Championships. Teammate Sean Wright, also from Aberdeen, finished fourth in 1:11.72.
Also from Frostburg, Xzavier Robertson of Aberdeen placed fourth in the 60 dash in 7.11, and Ron Troutman (North Harford) was third in the weight throw at 44 feet. Sean Wright of Aberdeen ran on Frostburg's 4x400 relay.
Damian Cruz, a 2011 Aberdeen grad, ran his first college meet for Holy Family University of Philadelphia in a meet at Ursinus College Dec. 3. He placed sixth in the 200 dash in 23.51 and sixth in 400 in 54.21.
Salisbury University sophomore Kara Tolson (Patterson Mill) was named Female Track Athlete of the Week Dec. 6 by the Capital Athletic Conference after breaking the school record in the 60-meter dash in a meet in Newport News, Va. She clocked 8.18 in the dash and anchored the Seagulls 4x400 team to a school record 4:14.52.
