Loper pulls away for triathlon win at Rocky Gap

Shawn Loper of Bel Air left the field almost 3 minutes behind when he won the YMCA Rocky Gap Triathlon in Flintstone June 4.

Competing in the International Division race — a 0.9-mile swim, 21.6-mile bike, and 10K run — Loper took the lead in the bike-to-run transition then began to pull away on the run. He completed the 10K in 40:21 to reach the finish in 2:14:15.

Competing for the Harford Multisport Club, Loper held a lead of 2:50 at the finish. Also among the 74 finishers of the International Division were Bridget Wildt of White Hall, who took third among the women in 2:53:10, and Matt Hubbell, 18, of Bel Air, second in his age group in 2:59:26.

There were 195 others in the Sprint Division, also held at Rocky Gap State Park. Three from the Harford Multisport Club placed among the top four in their age groups. Kat Brady of Delta, Pa., was first in 30-34 in 1:03:39; Lois King of Forest Hill was third in 40-44 in 1:03:55; and Bill Matthews of Delta, fourth in 45-49 in 1:04:39.

A. Calvert Thurn of Havre de Grace was also among the finishers. He clocked 1:31:05.

Elsewhere, Rob Tisch of Bel Air placed 11th in his age group in the Mooseman 70.3 Triathlon at Newfound Lake, N.H. on June 5. Tisch, 40, swam 1.2 miles in 27:09; biked 56 miles averaging 19.7 mph, and ran 13.1 miles in 1:28:52. He finished 62nd overall in 4:51:04.

Survivor 7 Miler

Keith Burgess of Bel Air was the men's winner in the survivor's category of the Survivor 7 Miler in Baltimore Sunday.

Burgess, 56, completed a course from Tide Point to Canton in 48:22 and finished 31st overall. There were 1,023 finishers between the 7- and 4-mile races, with both races having a survivors category for those whose lives have been affected by serious illness, disease, or accidents.

In the survivors category of the 4-mile race, Michele Hoffman of Havre de Grace led the women in 34:41. Neil Fishler of Bel Air led the men's 50-59 age group in 57:44.

In the open category, Esther Buchser of Abingdon won the women's 60-69 age group in 1:01:31, and Alex Loper of Bel Air placed third in men's 20-29 in 41:40.

Dave Berdan, runner-up in the recent Bel Air Town Run, was the men's winner of the 7- miler in 35:05. Megan DiGregorio, the women's Town Run winner, placed third among the women in 44:53 behind Keneni Orgesa (43:35) ofWashington, D.C.

Elsewhere...

Chris Litz of Bel Air, a recent graduate of Goucher College, finished sixth in the 5K to Benefit Cool Kids Saturday in Lutherville. Litz, the Goucher record holder in the pole vault, ran 21:32 behind Neville Anderson, who won in 19:06.

Marge Rosasco led the over-60 women in the BRRC 5K at Baltimore's Lake Montebello Sunday. The 62-year-old from Joppa ran 24:15 to remain undefeated in her age group since turning 60.

Lindsay Lippencott of Forest Hill was recently named to the Academic All-District III women's track and field/cross country first team. The Wingate University sophomore and C.M. Wright alumna has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average as a biology major. She clocked 19:58 in the 5,000 meters this spring in the North Carolina school's first season of track and field.

A record field is expected for the upcoming Baltimore Women's Classic. With two weeks remaining until its June 26 running, the 5K race has drawn 2,500 entries. Information on the event is available at http://www.baltimorewomensclassic.com.
