In the warm winter of 2012, Charles Powell II is the hottest runner in Harford County road races.
The 45-year-old Bel Air resident won the RASAC Noble's Mill 5 Miler in Churchville Sunday, leaving the rest of the field far behind. He reached the finish in 32:38, leading runner-up Jerry Henderson by 59 seconds.
It was Powell's fourth win in four weeks of the RASAC Snowflake Series. He has won the races by margins of 1 to 5 1/2 minutes, an auspicious start for the year after being slowed by injury over the last two years.
David Stevenson finished third in Sunday's race in 34:28. Kirk Ingold was fourth in 37:02 and John Jagde, fifth in 37:32.
Megan McNew, former North Harford standout who lives in Baltimore, won the women's race in 36:25. She finished more than 2 minutes ahead of Sarah Zephir-Thomason, the runner-up in 38:45. Jen Meis, 41:27, Donna Lewis, 42:28; and Michele Hoffman, 42:32, finished in the top five.
Jacobs wins for Frostburg
Wes Jacobs of Aberdeen won the 1000-meter run in an indoor meet at Marietta College in Ohio Friday. A senior at Frostburg State, Jacobs ran 2:37.03. Two other Aberdeen High School alums placed for Frostburg. Xzavier Robertson anchored the 4x200 relay to a win after placing seventh in the 60. Eric Williams placed fourth in the 800 in 2:03.38. C. Milton Wright grad Jen Bower ran on the Frostburg women's distance medley relay team, which placed second.
Harford Tech grad Dana Smothers ran 49.13 in the 400 at the New Balance Invitational in New York City Friday. The Bowie State sophomore also ran 22.47 in the 200 meters.
Shea Staab of Fallston, a Goucher sophomore, placed fifth in the 5000 in 20:51 at the DuCharme Invitational at Dickinson College Saturday.
Markley leads John Carroll in MIAA
Austin Markley won the triple jump and placed second in 300 dash and third in the pole vault to lead John Carroll's indoor track team in the MIAA Championships Friday in Landover.
Markley, a junior, scored 24 of his team's 42 points with a 40-10 1/2 in the triple jump, 36.77 in the 300 and 11-6 in the pole vault. The Patriots boys took fifth as a team.
Holly Cook was the high scorer for the girls, leading the Patriots to fourth in IAAM scoring. She placed second in the 1600 in 5:20.93, third in the 3200 in 11:52.77, and she ran with Meredith Haggerty, Caroline Haggerty and Kristen Kohles to place third in the 4x800 relay in 9:57.86.
Rebecca Driver scored 11 points for John Carroll with a second in the high jump at 5-0, seventh in the 500 at 1:25.74 and eighth in the 55 hurdles at 9.71.
Other girls scoring were Heather Kirwan, third in vault, 8-0; Lauren Cook, fifth in vault, 7-6; Shannon Vinton, fifth in high jump, 4-8; Kristen Kohles, sixth, 500, 1:23.29; T'Keyah Lisbon, seventh, 55 hurdles, 9.70; and the team of Kohles, Annie Morris, Caroline Sdanowich and Claire Zurkowski, fourth in 4x400 in 4:17.03.
Ben Pickett finished third in the MIAA 3200 in 9:53.15. Derek Alban was sixth in the 1600 in 4:33.70 and eighth in the 800 in 2:06.36. Dave Knaide ran 4:37.75 for eighth in the 1600. Drew Cook placed seventh in the vault at 10-6.
Tech Relay and Fallston's Johnson win in 2A East
Chris Johnson of Fallston and Harford Tech's 4x200 relay team captured regional titles in the MPSSAA 2A East Region meet Monday in Landover.
Johnson, a junior, won the boys' 55 dash in 6.40 then placed third in the 300 in 37.50. Teammate Chris West was also dash finalist, placing eighth in 6.73.
Paige Chapman, Charice Corbin, Cierra Singleton and Marietta Corbin relayed to victory in the 4x200. They clocked 1:48.30 to win by 2.8 seconds. The Tech girls placed fifth among 12 teams with three-four finishes in both the 55 dash and 55 hurdles. Chapman was third in the dash in 7.2 with Marietta Corbin fourth in 7.3. Singleton was third in the hurdles in 8.9 with Charice Corbin fourth in 9.0. Jheniel Kelly took fifth in two events, the 500 in 1:25.0 and high jump, 4-7.
For the Tech boys, Michael Blickenstaff placed fifth in the 55 in 6.62 and the 4x800 relay placed fourth in 9:34.9.
Marissa Walker and Lauren Woolen took second-place finishes for Fallston. Walker cleared 8-6 in the pole vault, and Woolen, 4-9 in the high jump. The Cougars also took third in the 4x400 and fourth in the 4x200 and 4x800 relays.
Joppatowne senior Breana Hagwood finished second in the 55 hurdles in 8.6 seconds. The Mariners' Brittany Meads took fifth in the 300 in 43.70.
