Aberdeen city police have charged a local man in connection with a sexual assault on a 13-year-old girl last week.
Gerald Joseph Hazelwood, 29, of the 300 block of North Philadelphia Boulevard, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree rape, second-degree sex offense, third-degree sex offense and second-degree assault.
The girl's mother told police her daughter was assaulted Thursday while at a friend's house, Lt. Fred Budnick of the Aberdeen Police wrote in a news release Monday morning.
The victim knew Hazelwood before the alleged assault, according to the release.
Hazelwood is being held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center.
He appeared before District Court Judge Mimi Cooper for a bail review hearing Monday afternoon, where Cooper ordered him held without bail and ordered him to not have any contact with the alleged victim.
Public Defender Lynne McChrystal requested a reduction in bail, or for it to be left as originally set at $150,000, pointing out that Hazelwood is a lifelong Maryland resident and has been in Harford County for three years.
The incident took place at a party, according to Assistant Harford State's Attorney Kemba Lydia-Moore, who added that, according to charging documents, Hazelwood said the girl approached him at the party.
Lydia-Moore requested that Hazelwood be held without bond. Cooper concurred.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Detective John Divel of the Aberdeen Police Department at 410-272-2121.
