An Aberdeen High School student was arrested and charged recently with having a weapon on school property at a local camp.
A 16-year-old female camp counselor was working at Harford from Tuesday, Oct. 25, through Friday, Oct. 28, when elementary school students were at the camp, according to the police report. On the student's last day, the outdoor educator at the camp was notified the girl had knives.
The student was then directed to the nurse's office with all of her luggage where, according to the report, they found seven knives of various types and sizes. They included, according to Monica Worrell, spokesperson for the Harford County Sheriff's Office, knives as small as a Swiss army knife to a box cutter razor blade and at least two knives with blades 5 1/2 inches long or longer.
The knives were taken as evidence and the student has been charged with possessing a weapon on school property and disturbing school operations.
After being arrested, she was released to her mother that afternoon. The student did not plan to harm anyone, Teri Kranefeld, manager of communications for Harford County Public Schools, said Wednesday..
"We have no reason to believe that the student intended to harm anyone, however, carrying weapons of any kind on school property is a serious offense and one that is not taken lightly," she wrote in an e-mail. "Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken against the student involved."
