An Aberdeen man was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly hitting a boy with his pick-up truck while intoxicated and then fleeing the scene.

Aberdeen police Lt. Fred Budnick said a 12-year-old boy was on a bicycle when he collided with a vehicle at the intersection of James and Rogers streets at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday.

The boy was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center with a possible head injury that was considered non-life-threatening, Budnick said.

The suspect that struck him was driving a vehicle described as an older-model white Dodge pick-up, and had fled when officers arrived.

A witness directed them to Custis Street and Gunnison Drive, where they found the vehicle and arrested Derek William Strickland, of the 600 block of Custis Street, Budnick said.

He was charged with driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury.
