A Bel Air town commissioner, who has carried the unofficial title of mayor, is the new attorney for the Town of Port Deposit.
David Carey started in the position on Nov. 1, he said Wednesday, but he does not expect it to interfere with his position on the Bel Air Board of Commissioners.
"It's obviously not a full-time position," he said. "They will simply be a client of mine."
Working as the Port Deposit attorney requires Carey to attend meetings twice a month, on Tuesday nights, and deal with issues such as leases, personnel and procurement issues. Port Deposit is much smaller than Bel Air, Carey said, but deals with similar issues.
As a member of the Board of Commissioners for the past 14 years, Carey said his experience in municipal government makes this particular position "right up [his] alley."
Carey took over an empty position left by John Buck, who left the town to take an offer with another governmental agency, Port Deposit Town Administrator Rodney Heinze said Wednesday. Buck thought the new position may pose a conflict of interest and decided to resign, Heinze said.
The Port Deposit Town Council interviewed three people, who were all "superb," Heinze said, but one of the reasons they chose Carey is because he is "actively involved in government every day."
"We feel quite privileged to get him here," Heinze added.
