Baltimore man facing rape charges in connection with 2007 assault on Harford teen

A Baltimore man is facing rape and assault charges in connection with the 2007 assault of a girl who was 14 at the time.

Antwan Alton Gibson, 27, of the 4100 block of Potter Street in Baltimore, was charged Tuesday with second-degree rape, third-degree sex offense and second-degree assault.

At his bail review hearing in Harford County District Court Wednesday, Gibson's lawyer, Brandon Mead, said Gibson has worked as an auto wholesaler for the past three years, has two kids and one on the way. He has one conviction and has never failed to appear in court.

Mead said despite the severity of the charges in this case, Gibson always appears in court and asked for a reduction of the $100,000 bail set by the court commissioner.

"It's our understanding that the young lady involved with this case has recanted," Mead said.

He added he believes the young woman has also refused to appear at any court proceeding in the future.

Assistant State's Attorney Kemba Lydia-Moore said a warrant was issued for Gibson's arrest in 2008 and after three years, he was ultimately arrested, making him a serious flight risk.

She said he also has pending cases.

Lydia-Moore said Gibson allegedly gave the 14-year-old victim alcohol and forced her to have sex. She said there is medical corroboration of the information the young woman provided.

It was unclear Thursday where in Harford County the alleged assault took place.

District Court Judge Victor Butanis raised Gibson's bail to $500,000. Gibson remained in custody at the Harford County Detention Center Thursday on the $500,000 bond.
