In what we've become accustomed to, the high school football gets extended to another week and this year there's plenty of UCBAC representation. How we got here though, is a bit crazy.
I guess there was no region more crazy than the Class 2A East Region, where Fallston and Patterson Mill have both been in a top four seeding pool for weeks. Fallston was a steady No. 2 seed behind Kent Island and Patterson Mill was a solid four seed behind Wicomico.
Fallston entered Friday's game with two real goals on its mind. Finish the year perfect at 10-0 and maybe that will jump the Cougars into the top seed. Well, both goals were shot down in the loss to Aberdeen, which had its own reasons for winning.
The loss not only dropped the Cougars from unbeaten status, but more importantly dropped them in the region standings. The Cougars slipped back to the three seed, which means a road game this week and not the confines of Fallston.
The Cougars have to make the lengthy trip to Wicomico Friday night at 7 p.m. Sadly, a win would have given the Cougars a top seed as Kent Island was upset by Queen Anne's.
Patterson Mill didn't change, but a loss would have kept them out. The Huskies visit Kent Island Friday at 7 p.m.
Now, back to Aberdeen and the Eagles' surge to a postseason berth, their first since 2004. When I wrote earlier that Aberdeen had reasons for winning, I wasn't joking.
The Eagles were in a pretty simple situation. Win and get in, lose and hope. Well, the Eagles won and with the win came a boat load of points. Enough points to jump the Eagles into the 3A North Region's second seed and a home playoff game. Aberdeen will host Franklin on Friday at 7 p.m.
If Aberdeen had lost at Fallston, the Eagles would have probably slid into the playoffs by just over a half point. And a game at North Harford as the fourth seed.
North Harford, meanwhile, has been riding atop the 3A North standings for several weeks. The Hawks earned the top seed and will host Digital Harbor at 7 p.m. Friday night.
Last but not least, Havre de Grace has squeaked into the Class 1A East Region playoffs as the fourth seed with a 4-6 record, the worst record of any team in the playoffs in any classification.
Regardless of the record, the Warriors are making their county leading 18th playoff appearance. The Warriors have a short trip to meet a familiar foe. Havre de Grace will visit unbeaten Perryville at 7 p.m. Friday night.
The Panthers cruised through the regular season to post the school's first perfect regular season for a varsity football team.
Good luck to all teams playing this weekend and that's not limited to the gridiron.
